Lucy Davis, known for her role as Dawn Tinsley in the U.S. version of 'The Office,' has revealed her terminal cancer diagnosis and is encouraging regular breast self-examinations.
Davis described her diagnosis, stating that the detected abnormality was not a typical "lump" but rather a "hard spot." She emphasized the importance of knowing one's own body and recognizing any changes.
The NHS recommends performing breast or chest self-examinations approximately once a month. This practice helps individuals become familiar with the normal appearance and feel of their breasts, making it easier to identify any deviations.
Factors to monitor during self-examination include:
- A lump or swelling in the breast, chest, or armpit.
- Changes in breast skin, such as dimpling or redness, which can be more difficult to observe on darker skin tones.
- Alterations in the size or shape of one or both breasts or the chest area. While variations in breast size are common, any change that is unusual for an individual should be noted.
- Nipple discharge, particularly if it contains blood and the individual is not pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Changes in the nipple's appearance or shape, such as inversion or the development of a rash resembling eczema.
- Sores or ulcers on the chest.
Breasts naturally change throughout the menstrual cycle and with age. Therefore, the focus should be on identifying changes that are abnormal for the individual rather than adhering to a strict definition of what constitutes a "lump."
