Actress Zendaya has drawn criticism for wearing earrings reportedly dating back 3,000 years during the press tour for her latest film, "The Odyssey." The pieces, described as 18-karat gold medallion discs from the first millennium B.C. attributed to the Ziwiye hoard, were worn by the actress at a photo call in London.

According to CNN, the earrings were discovered in the 1940s and are attributed to Iranian heritage. Jeweler Glenn Spiro designed the earrings, which feature diamonds and were acquired by Barron London. Barron London stated that the "ancient gold discs are held within a simple, noninvasive claw setting that does not alter or damage the original objects in any way." The jeweler also commented, "At a time when Iran is frequently viewed through the lens of contemporary events, we hope these earrings can serve as a reminder of the country's enduring artistic, cultural and historical legacy."

Social media users expressed mixed reactions. Some commenters found the decision "disrespectful" and argued that such ancient artifacts should be housed in museums. One user wrote, "As an archeology student. I HATE THIS. They should be in a museum." Another expressed concern, stating, "While I'm glad they're preserved, Shouldn't ancient artifacts be in a museum?"

Others defended Zendaya, with some calling the situation a "non-issue." One fan commented, "This is a non-issue that people need to get over."

However, some Iranian fans voiced their distress. "As an Iranian, I find this whole situation deeply upsetting. This piece is a part of Iran's history and cultural heritage, and it should not be in the hands of anyone other than Iran and its people," one user wrote. "It was taken from Iran and transformed into an earring, while if it had stayed in its homeland, it would have been protected and preserved in a museum."

This is not the first time a celebrity's fashion choice has ignited debate. Kim Kardashian faced criticism for wearing Marilyn Monroe's iconic dress to the 2022 Met Gala, a garment she later expressed regret over due to its fragility. Similarly, Margot Robbie wore a replica of a 175-year-old bracelet made from the locks of the Brontë sisters at a premiere earlier this year. In January, Robbie also wore Elizabeth Taylor's Taj Mahal diamond necklace.
