A contestant on a YouTube survival show was located and rescued nearly 18 hours after she went missing in a cold, rain-soaked section of Pigeon River Forest in northern Michigan, authorities said.

The 36-year-old California woman, whose identity has not been released, left the designated base camp at about 5 p.m. Friday in Charlton Township to search for water and did not return, the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office said. After the show’s hosts conducted a ground search on their own, they called 911 at about 5 a.m. Saturday when she still had not been found. Multiple agencies launched a coordinated search immediately.

A Michigan State Police helicopter spotted the woman wandering in a swampy area of the forest at about 10:40 a.m., the sheriff’s office said. Aerial footage released by authorities shows the woman looking up and waving as rescuers guided ground teams to her position. She was able to walk out of the forest with assistance from ground personnel.

Medical teams evaluated the woman at the scene and determined she had not suffered serious injuries, authorities said. The rescue ended a search that extended through the night and into the following morning under cold and rainy conditions.

Officials declined to immediately identify the program or its hosts. The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police worked with local emergency management and other agencies in the search and rescue operation, agency statements said.

Authorities said it remained unclear whether the contestant would continue to participate in the show. The department did not release additional medical details or name the woman pending family notification.

Pigeon River Forest, a heavily wooded area in Otsego County, has varied terrain including wetlands and swampy pockets that can complicate search efforts. In this case, aerial surveillance played a key role in locating the missing participant after an extended overnight search.

The incident underscores the logistical and safety challenges that can accompany outdoor filming and survival competitions in remote environments. Local authorities handled the rescue and provided on-scene medical assessment; no arrests or violations were reported in connection with the episode.
