Carnival Cruise Line is facing a mixed reception from passengers regarding a new pilot program that uses stickers on cruise cards to identify guests who have prepaid their gratuities. The initiative, which also includes thank-you notes in staterooms, aims to acknowledge crew members and their service.
A TikTok video shared on October 28 showed a "Crew Love, I pre-paid my gratuities" sticker on a guest's cruise card, along with a note expressing gratitude for their prepayment. Carnival Cruise Line stated that the program is a way for guests to recognize the efforts of their team members, ensuring gratuities are shared among both visible and behind-the-scenes staff.
"Our team members provide great service to every guest," a Carnival spokesperson told Fox News Digital. "The ‘Crew Love’ stickers and thank-you notes are simply a way to let our crew know that a guest has prepaid their gratuities, while giving those guests a little recognition for their generosity. This is one component of a broader pilot, and we’re listening to feedback as we evaluate it."
The program has ignited discussion on social media. Some passengers expressed concern that it publicly highlights tipping habits, potentially leading to judgment for those who cannot afford to prepay. One user commented on TikTok, "I prepay my gratuities, but I feel it’s my business, not everyone else’s. I don’t like this at all. People shouldn’t be shamed if they can’t afford to prepay." Another user voiced a similar sentiment, finding the stickers "offputting."
Conversely, other passengers welcomed the initiative. "I love it! We always prepay our gratuities and tip extra. … I spend about $250-$300 extra tipping people," one user wrote. Another added, "That’s actually the best news I’ve heard all day! I’ve always noticed you get better service if you tip upfront."
Discussions on Reddit also reflected this division, with some finding the stickers "tacky" and "cringy," while others appreciated the transparency.
This gratuity recognition program is one of several recent issues concerning cruise costs and fees that have caused passenger frustration. Earlier this year, daily gratuities and service charges were raised by several major cruise lines, and Carnival Cruise Line faced pushback over plans for dynamic pricing on drink and Wi-Fi packages.
