A woman has sparked online debate after questioning whether to break up with her boyfriend over his "disgusting" chip addiction. The poster, who has been dating the unnamed man for seven months, described him as "kind, has a good job that pays well, not bad looking, treats me well and never allows me to pay for anything," but expressed reservations about his snacking habits.
During a two-week trip to Spain, she observed that he consumed "at least 3 packets of crisps per day." These were reportedly not sophisticated varieties but brands such as Space Raiders, Monster Munch, and Nik Naks. The boyfriend allegedly favored these snacks over local cuisine and even purchased them in bulk from a local grocery store.
Concerns Over Snacking Habits
The woman also detailed concerns about his table manners. She stated that he does not wash his hands after eating crisps unless prompted, leading to "disgusting synthetic crisp dust all over his fingers and fingernails." She further described a habit of arching his head back to empty leftover crumbs from a packet into his mouth. Additionally, she reported that he sometimes inflates empty crisp packets into balloons and pops them, on occasion spraying crumbs.
"I’ve also found scrunched up crisp packets wedged behind his bed, almost as though he can’t be bothered to walk to the bin," she wrote. These habits have led her to develop "the ick" and question the future of their relationship, particularly as they are planning to move in together.
"I just can’t help but thinking I would prefer a man who doesn’t eat over 3 packets of crisps a day and doesn’t smell like pickled onion Monster Munch or cheesy wotsits," she stated.
Online Reactions
Commenters on the Mumsnet forum where the post originated offered a range of opinions. A poll indicated that 63% of respondents felt her concerns were "not being unreasonably." Many agreed that the couple might not be compatible, with one user advising, "You’re not compatible!!! He’s not up to your standards. Move on, don’t settle!" Another user found the habit of inflating and popping crisp packets particularly off-putting.
Some commenters focused on his reluctance to try local food while abroad as a greater issue than his crisp consumption. However, others suggested that his snacking habits did not warrant ending the relationship. One critic commented, "Dump him. He can do better than a crisp snob."
