Griff Rhys Jones aims to distinguish his new television series, "Griff Across the Alps," from typical celebrity travelogues, emphasizing that it is not merely a holiday.

In the first episode of the six-part series, which charts a course from Chamonix, France, to Slovenia and traverses Switzerland, Italy, Austria, and Germany, the 72-year-old comedian tackled a variety of demanding activities. These included abseiling down a steep rock face, an experience he described with a "slightly forced chortle" as an attempt to embrace "sheer terror."

Despite his stated intention to avoid the impression of a leisurely trip, the program features scenes of Rhys Jones relaxing in the thermal springs near Mont Blanc. He also participated in rafting along the Arve River and learned to prepare a traditional dish, fricassee au lard, with a local chef.

The series also shows Rhys Jones at the Refuge de Goudet, a mountain dormitory for climbers, at an altitude of 12,500 feet. Though he was airlifted to the location by helicopter, he expressed apprehension about the heights, admitting, "I'm just holding on for dear life here."

The review notes Rhys Jones's history of a strict diet and his acknowledgment of having been teetotal for over 40 years, referencing past struggles with an eating disorder. This background is contrasted with the hearty meal he prepares in the episode, though the review suggests his sustained healthy lifestyle may equip him to handle such indulgences.

"Griff Across the Alps" documents Rhys Jones's journey across diverse Alpine landscapes, balancing physically taxing adventures with cultural experiences.
