Whole Foods Market's Berry Chantilly Cake has achieved "cult favorite" status, with customers frequently celebrating special occasions with the dessert and some reportedly consuming it weekly. The cake, described on the Whole Foods website as featuring "layers of delicate vanilla cake, fluffy Chantilly cream frosting and fresh berries," has inspired devotion, with anecdotal accounts of customers waiting in line for it during power outages and natural disasters.

The cake has also spawned variations, including parfaits and a Berry Chantilly Latte, which gained popularity in 2025. Its widespread appeal is evident on social media platforms, including Reddit, where discussions often highlight the cake's desirability. One Reddit thread from a few years ago seeking opinions on the cake elicited overwhelmingly positive responses, with users describing it as "magic" and noting the availability of various portion sizes, from full cakes to mini cupcakes.

Many customers have shared that they regularly purchase the Berry Chantilly Cake for parties and events. "We order this cake for every function!" one user wrote, while another stated, "I’ve purchased [it] a couple of times and gotta say it’s worth the hype."

The cake's origins trace back 13 years to a Whole Foods store in New Orleans, where a bakery team member developed the recipe based on her grandmother's original creation. It became an immediate success in the Southern region before its introduction nationwide, eventually becoming Whole Foods' top-selling cake.

In 2024, the cake became the subject of social media outcry when some customers accused Whole Foods of altering the recipe. The company acknowledged at the time that it had "recently aligned the flavor profile, size, packaging and price" of the cake. However, following customer feedback, Whole Foods stated it would "reintroduce single slices of the Berry Chantilly Cake that are the same as the classic our customers know and love."

Additionally, Whole Foods announced the launch of its Next Generation Farmer Fund, an initiative aimed at supporting farmers under 40 with funding and technical assistance for sustainable farming practices. Throughout August, 1% of the revenue generated from Berry Chantilly Cake sales will be donated to this fund.
