Sir Cameron Mackintosh's West End production of "Oliver!" has modified one of Fagin's signature scenes, a decision attributed to concerns that the character is too frightening for contemporary family audiences. An insider indicated that the alteration aims to align the show with a perceived preference among modern parents for gentler entertainment.

Historically, Fagin, a creation of Charles Dickens, has been depicted as a complex and unpredictable criminal. In the current staging, a pivotal moment where Fagin discovers young Oliver examining his hidden treasures has been toned down. Previously, the character's reaction involved a volatile outburst, including grabbing Oliver and shouting. This has been softened to a stern verbal admonishment, reducing the scene's dramatic intensity.

This adjustment shifts the portrayal from a sinister figure, as seen in previous interpretations like Ron Moody's in the 1968 film, towards a more "loveable rogue" archetype.

The role of Fagin is set to be taken over by comedian and actor Matt Lucas for a six-week engagement beginning September 22. Lucas will step in while current Fagin performer Simon Lipkin takes paternity leave. The production is directed by Matthew Bourne. Representatives for Sir Cameron Mackintosh have declined to comment on the changes.
