Personal Struggles and Support

Earlier this year, Wayne Rooney spoke candidly about his past struggles with alcoholism, crediting his wife with saving his life. In an interview on former Manchester United teammate Rio Ferdinand's podcast, Rooney detailed the severity of his drinking, which began in his early years as a footballer.

He admitted that his desire to "go out and enjoy my time with friends" escalated to a point where he was "struggling massively." Rooney recalled drinking for "two days straight" before turning up for training, attempting to mask the effects with eye drops, chewing gum, and aftershave. He stated that at times he would score goals and then resume drinking for two days.

Rooney expressed that he felt unable to turn to anyone with his struggles, not wanting to burden others. However, he emphasized Coleen's crucial role in helping him manage his issues. "I honestly believe if she weren't there I'd be dead," he said, highlighting Coleen's consistent support over more than 20 years. He described her as instrumental in keeping him on the right path, particularly given their shared history since childhood in Liverpool, where they began dating at 16.

Coleen and Wayne Rooney met when they were 12 years old and have navigated public life and family challenges together since their teenage years. The recent anniversary celebrations underscore their long-standing relationship and Rooney's public acknowledgment of his wife's unwavering support.
