Vincent Pastore, a veteran actor recognized for portraying mobsters and tough characters, has died at the age of 80. He was widely known for his role as Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero on the acclaimed television series “The Sopranos.”
Bob McGowan, Pastore’s manager since his time on “The Sopranos,” confirmed the death on Saturday, having learned of it from fellow actor Vincent Curatola. Pastore was discovered at his home on City Island in New York after he had not been heard from for several days. McGowan noted that he had been trying to reach Pastore regarding a potential work opportunity.
"He was the most loyal client and he always gave to charity," McGowan said. "And he was the kind of guy who would help anybody, which is rare in my business."
Michael Imperioli, who had a long-standing friendship and professional relationship with Pastore, shared his sentiments on Instagram. "We did lots of work together and traveled all over the USA as well as Italy and Australia. Lots of good times. Lots of laughs," Imperioli wrote. "Vinny was a kind hearted brother who cared deeply about his family and friends. I will miss him always."
Pastore’s film career began in the 1980s, and he secured roles in notable films such as “Goodfellas” and “Awakenings” in 1990. His portrayal of Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero, a character who was Tony Soprano's friend and later an FBI informant in “The Sopranos,” was a significant part of his career, appearing in 30 episodes.
Born in the Bronx, Pastore was raised in suburban New Rochelle, New York. His biography indicates he enlisted in the Navy during the Vietnam War and later attended Pace University. He is survived by his daughter, Renee Pastore.
