Students are finding creative ways to stay cool and focused amidst a prevailing heatwave, with some resorting to learning in the unusual environment of World War II bunkers and using footbaths as a cooling measure.
The island features numerous German fortifications dating back to its occupation during World War Two. These historical structures are now serving a dual purpose, offering respite from the heat and an unconventional classroom setting.
According to Judd, a teacher, students have been taking short breaks in the bunkers for cooling periods, with lessons even being conducted in these subterranean spaces. One teacher suggested the footbath idea, which has proven popular among the pupils.
One student, Beatrix, aged nine, commented that the footbaths help her concentrate more effectively while working in the heat. Anna, 10, noted that while the idea of putting feet in cold water felt strange, it ultimately provided relief. Harry, also 10, stated that the footbaths were "helping a lot," and Ava, 10, expressed her satisfaction with the additional allowance of bringing fans to school.
These innovative approaches highlight the challenges faced by educational institutions during extreme weather conditions and the resourcefulness of both educators and students in adapting to the circumstances.
