Unseen footage offering a candid look at Michael Jackson in 2001, during what producer Marc Shaffel describes as the pinnacle of his career, is being prepared for release. The material, filmed for a planned fly-on-the-wall documentary and reality series, shows the artist revisiting his childhood home in Gary, Indiana, interacting with fans, and engaging with celebrities.

Shaffel, a longtime friend of Jackson, spent years accumulating the footage. He described the period of filming as one where Jackson was in good spirits, particularly as the 1993 allegations by Jordan Chandler had passed and fans were receptive. The material captures Jackson offering encouragement to a then 19-year-old Beyoncé and joking about the removal of "dirty pictures" from the bedroom he shared with his brothers in the Jackson Five.

However, this period of relative calm was short-lived. In November 2003, while the documentary was still in production, Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department raided Jackson's Neverland ranch as part of a sex abuse investigation. Although Jackson was acquitted two years later, the allegations significantly impacted his career, leading him to flee the U.S. for Bahrain. TV networks lost interest in the documentary, leaving Shaffel with a large volume of unreleased footage.

Filmmaker Marc Shaffel explained the clutter in the Jackson family home was due to an older relative residing there with little notice of the filming.

Shaffel now believes the footage, one of the last extensive portraits of Jackson made during his lifetime, is relevant again due to a posthumous resurgence in the artist's popularity, fueled in part by the recent $1 billion-grossing biopic "Michael." He plans to release his own film portrait, tentatively titled "The Real Michael," aiming to provide an authentic account of Jackson's life.

"This footage is a perfect real-life account of his life - and perfect to accompany the massive theatrical release of the Michael film," Shaffel stated.

Included in the footage, Jackson was seen meeting with a 19-year-old Beyonce.

The producer also shed light on a peculiar moment captured in the footage, where Jackson is sprayed with perfume in his limousine. Shaffel explained that Jackson, known for his pranks, enjoyed overdoing cologne and perfume. During the filming, his cousin, acting as his assistant, sprayed an expensive perfume excessively as a prank, making it difficult for those in the car to breathe.

Shaffel hopes his film will reach a wider audience, complementing the renewed interest generated by the successful biopic and its planned sequel. He emphasized that he personally shot and funded the production, retaining ownership of the material.
