Viewers of the BBC quiz show University Challenge said they were distracted by a contestant who appeared disengaged during the programme's latest episode, with many taking to X to comment on her expression and level of participation.

The episode, hosted by Amol Rajan, pitted Trinity Hall, Cambridge — represented by Teymour Taj, Jake Bransgrove, Jeffrey Opreij and Shannon Gilbert — against a team from the London School of Economics and Political Science comprising Ryan Sharpe, Cormac Beirne, Andy Huff and Catherine Tan. During several moments of the contest viewers commented that Gilbert's demeanour suggested she was unhappy to be taking part.

Comments on X, formerly Twitter, included direct observations about Gilbert's facial expressions and participation. Some users posted that she looked "well p***ed off," that she seemed to be "on show under duress," and that she "really doesn't want to be there." Others compared her to cultural figures for her inscrutable look, referencing the Mona Lisa and Morticia Addams.

The reaction continued a recent pattern of viewer comment about contestant engagement on the long-running quiz. Earlier this month some viewers criticised a member of the Lincoln team for contributing little during their match, while a separate episode involving Cardiff University drew attention when a contestant acknowledged she had not caught the start of a question and offered an incorrect guess about a historical figure.

University Challenge, produced by the BBC, has featured a wide range of moments that prompt viewer discussion, from impressive individual performances to contestants' on-air demeanour. The programme airs on BBC Two and is available to stream on iPlayer.
