Universal's new $550 million Universal Kids Resort in Frisco, Texas, has faced swift criticism from guests who attended early preview events, with some comparing the park's aesthetics unfavorably to a "maximum security prison" or the poorly received Willy Wonka experience.

The park, scheduled to open to the public on July 1, features areas inspired by franchises such as Shrek, Minions, Jurassic World, Trolls, and SpongeBob SquarePants. However, attendees took to social media to voice their discontent, citing underwhelming theming, sparse decorations, and a notable absence of greenery.

Viral images circulating online depicted extensive areas of unpainted concrete and plaster, with rides appearing sparsely decorated. "Can they plant some more trees...?" one user commented, while another described the park as "a concrete monstrosity." Some visitors joked about the park's appearance, with one stating, "I thought it was Universal maximum security prison."

Other critiques included comparisons of the park's props to those found in seasonal home decor stores, with one user asserting, "The Halloween and Christmas props sold at Home Depot look better quality than the themed props staged around this park." Another expressed disbelief, saying, "This is bad, like actually really bad, to the point where I thought it was fake at first." Comparisons were also made to fairgrounds and even graveyards in terms of atmosphere and personality.

Universal Kids Resort is described on its website as an "all-new theme park that inspires the unbridled creativity of kids through play, discovery and imagination in a way that engages the whole family." It is specifically designed for families with young children, aiming to deliver Universal Destinations & Experiences' entertainment and adventure. The resort offers over 30 experiences, including rides, live entertainment, play zones, and character meet-and-greets.

Attractions include Shrek's Swamp, featuring play spaces and a family-friendly ride called Shrek & Fiona's Happily Ogre After. The Puss in Boots Del Mar area offers rides like Swings Over Del Mar and a puppet performance. The SpongeBob SquarePants zone includes rides such as Jellyfish Fields Jamboree and Bobbing Barrels. Illumination's Minions vs. Minions area hosts a family boat ride, Bello Bay Cruise, and a spinning ride. DreamWorks' TrollsFest incorporates music, dancing, and rides like Rhonda's TrollsFest Express. For dinosaur enthusiasts, Jurassic World Adventure Camp presents the Jurassic World: Cretaceous Coaster, Mr. DNA's Double Helix Spin, and Pteranodrop, along with play areas.

The Isle of Curiosity serves as the resort's central hub, offering interactive activities, shopping, and character appearances, including Gabby from Gabby's Dollhouse. Universal has been contacted for comment on the guest feedback.
