Caravan holidays within the United Kingdom are experiencing a notable surge in demand, with operators like Haven, Away Resorts, and Waterside Holiday Group reporting increased bookings. This trend is mirrored by a 133 percent rise in searches for campervans, motorhomes, and caravans on Gumtree since the beginning of the year.

Celebrities such as Gemma Collins, Stacey Solomon, and Coleen Rooney have been observed embracing caravan travel, and Dani and Danny Dyer have even launched their own holiday park. However, the appeal extends beyond celebrity endorsement. Samantha, a single mother from West Sussex who shares her experiences on TikTok as @samanthaproudmama, highlights the accessibility and affordability of holiday parks for parents traveling alone with children.

Samantha, who became a single parent approximately 18 months ago, described her first solo trip with her son, Jack, to a caravan park located just 30 minutes from her home. She explained that the proximity provided a sense of security, mitigating the pressure of being solely responsible for her child's well-being while away. "If it all went wrong and for whatever reason it wasn't okay, I'm literally just a drive away from home," she stated, noting that the cost was also significantly less than an international vacation.

This initial trip provided Samantha with the reassurance that she could still provide holiday experiences for her son without incurring substantial expenses. She found that the caravan parks offered amenities like swimming pools and playgrounds, and that her son enjoyed the novelty of the accommodation itself. "As silly as it sounds, it's so different to being at home," she said.

Contrary to an initial perception of caravan holidays being basic, Samantha discovered that many parks offer high-quality accommodations, with some caravans featuring amenities such as hot tubs and en-suite bathrooms. The primary advantage, she noted, is the sense of escape and relaxation without the extensive planning and travel stress associated with overseas trips. "With a caravan holiday, you still get that feeling of escapism. You're away, you can relax and put your feet up, but there's not that much effort involved in getting there."

Samantha suggests that there are options to suit various budgets and preferences, from luxurious to simple and affordable. She has also developed strategies for saving money, including traveling during term time before her son started school, booking activities like swimming in advance, and bringing groceries from home rather than relying on on-site dining. "One way you can save money is to pack up your weekly shop and bring it with you," she advised.

For parents hesitant about traveling alone with children, Samantha recommends starting with shorter trips to nearby locations and bringing familiar items to comfort the child. "Book somewhere not too far from home. Bring their toys and the things that keep them comfortable," she advised. She added that the availability of an on-site shop can also be reassuring. "I think sometimes as parents we worry about every possible scenario because we care so much about our children. But sometimes you just have to throw yourself into it a little bit. Keeping it local and keeping it simple definitely helped build my confidence."

Samantha's confidence has grown, and she now comfortably travels for longer durations. "Now I would happily drive four hours with my little boy for a six-night break and it doesn't faze me at all. The more experience you have, the more confident you become."
