Filmmaker Tyler Perry has addressed the notable absence of Janet Jackson from his latest film, "Why Did I Get Married Again?" The new movie, which premiered on Netflix on Wednesday, is the third installment in the popular comedy-drama franchise.

While several original cast members reprised their roles, including Sharon Leal, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Jill Scott, Lamman Rucker, and Richard T. Jones, Jackson, who played psychologist Dr. Patricia Agnew in the first two films, did not return. Her on-screen husband, Gavin, portrayed by Malik Yoba, also does not appear in the sequel; Gavin was written off at the end of the 2010 film "Why Did I Get Married Too?"

Dr. Patricia's absence is briefly mentioned in the new film. Her character is said to be attending a lecture tour, a reason quickly dismissed by another character who suggests she might still be grieving the death of her husband and son. Her son would have been the same age as the bride in the new movie, Jasmine, played by Armani Greer.

Perry, in an interview with The Culture Creators, stated that Jackson's unavailability was due to her residency in Las Vegas. "Janet, at the time, she was doing residency in Vegas," Perry said. "So we couldn’t work out the time. But who knows what will happen in the future."

Jackson's Las Vegas residency concluded on September 20, 2025. Production for "Why Did I Get Married Again?" began on September 29, 2025, leaving a narrow window between the end of her residency and the start of filming. This proximity has led to speculation about the precise reasons for her non-participation, with possibilities ranging from insufficient time for a cameo to potential disagreements over salary or a simple lack of desire to participate.

The original "Why Did I Get Married?" was released in 2007, focusing on the marital challenges faced by four college-friend couples. The sequel, "Why Did I Get Married Too?", followed in 2010, further exploring their relationships.
