Two men were caught on camera removing an “iconic vintage” Humpty Dumpty statue from a Cape May miniature golf course early Sunday, and police have released surveillance video as they investigate the theft.
Cape May Police said one of the suspects climbed a fence on Jackson Street and forcibly removed the life-size mounted figure from Ocean Putt Mini Golf before both men left with it. The course, a family-owned attraction that has operated since 1964, is a seasonal fixture in the Jersey Shore town.
Police said the statue, dressed in a blue-and-yellow suit and described by the department as a familiar landmark at the Ocean Putt course, was discarded a few properties down the road in damaged condition. Authorities noted the figure was not shattered but sustained visible damage when it was abandoned.
No arrests had been announced as of Thursday. Cape May police released the footage showing two individuals — whom investigators believe to be young men — entering the closed course predawn and removing the mounted figure, and asked the public to come forward with information that might help identify them.
Ocean Putt Mini Golf is one of several family attractions along the waterfront in the popular vacation destination. The business’s social media describes the course as family-owned since 1964; its seasonal operation and distinctive statues have made it a familiar stop for visitors to the area.
The theft drew attention on social media and local news as residents and tourists shared concerns about vandalism and the loss of a community fixture. Police encouraged anyone with tips or who recognizes the individuals in the released images to contact the Cape May Police Department. Investigators did not immediately provide details about a possible motive.
The department’s release of the surveillance images is part of an active investigation. Officials said they are following leads and will update the public if arrests are made or additional information becomes available.
Authorities did not release the exact date of the footage beyond saying the incident occurred predawn Sunday, and the investigation remains ongoing.
