Tradesmen in the United Kingdom are turning to social media platforms like TikTok to share humorous ways they are coping with a severe heatwave, as temperatures reach record highs.
Despite parts of the UK shutting down, with railways disrupted, schools closed, and many office workers transitioning to remote work, construction crews have continued their labor in conditions exceeding 36 degrees Celsius (96.8 degrees Fahrenheit).
On TikTok, these workers have shared memes and videos depicting their efforts to cool down. Some have recreated popular internet memes, including one referencing a Top Gear segment where presenters contemplated running away after a failed stunt, humorously suggesting it as a solution to the heat on site. Another worker posted a video lip-syncing to a reality TV personality's dramatic exit from a show, expressing an inability to continue under the extreme conditions.
Unconventional Cooling Methods
Workers have documented a range of creative and often humorous methods for cooling off. These include diving into paddling pools, with one worker from Birmingham documented taking a pack of cider into a small garden pool. Another individual filled a large container with water and sat in it, eating ice cream while his feet hung out.
Images and videos show workers diving headfirst into swimming pools still wearing their work attire, such as hi-vis tops, shorts, and hard hats. The trend echoes a past incident where builders filled a skip with water to beat the heat.
Beyond personal cooling strategies, some construction workers have opted to head directly to pubs after their shifts to enjoy cold drinks in beer gardens. Videos have also captured groups of workers humorously depicting their unsteady journeys home after spending time at the pub.
Broader Impacts of the Heatwave
The extreme temperatures have led to widespread disruption across the UK. A red weather warning for extreme heat has been extended, with potential highs nearing 40 degrees Celsius. This heatwave has broken daily temperature records, with the hottest June day recorded. The UK also experienced its warmest June night on record.
In response to the heat, over a thousand schools have partially or fully closed, some sending children home early or allowing them to wear PE kits. Transport networks have faced significant disruption, with passengers advised to avoid non-essential travel. Major parts of the London Underground experienced severe service disruptions.
Healthcare facilities have also been impacted, with some hospitals declaring critical incidents due to cooling system failures affecting critical infrastructure. For instance, two hospital trusts reported issues with their MRI scanners failing in the heat.
Emergency services have been stretched. The London Ambulance Service recorded its highest number of life-threatening emergencies, attributing the surge to the extreme heat. Tragically, a swimmer died after entering the sea at Aberavon beach. Additionally, a fire engine caught fire while en route to a crash in Dorset due to the high temperatures, before being extinguished by other crews.
Water companies have implemented hosepipe bans in affected areas due to record demand. Authorities are urging the public to stay indoors between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., keep windows and curtains closed, and stay hydrated.
