Viewers of The Voice UK have voiced strong disapproval following the departure of long-serving coach Sir Tom Jones. The Welsh music legend, 86, stated he was "axed" by ITV "last-minute" after 13 years on the judging panel, a claim that has fueled significant backlash on social media.
As the current series, featuring Jones, aired on Saturday, many viewers took to X, formerly Twitter, to question the decision. "Why are they getting rid of Tom Jones?" became a prevalent question among fans. Some criticized the new coaching lineup, with one user writing, "Can't believe they've sacked the legend Tom Jones and replaced him with Stacey Solomon. What does she know about musical talent? About mentoring a singer? ITV are making a mockery of #thevoice." Another commenter stated, "Why the f**k are they getting rid of Tom Jones on The Voice again?? He’s the only one who actually knows how to sing out of the judges."
Calls to "Keep Tom, Keep Tom, Keep Tom" and "Keep Tom Jones and get rid of the producer of The Voice" flooded the platform.
Adding to the controversy are reports that fellow coach Will.i.am is profoundly affected by Jones's exit. Sources claim Will.i.am was "furious" and even "in tears" over the decision. According to a source, Will.i.am had "made no secret of how he feels about Tom Jones’ sacking." The source added that during the first filming session for the new series in Manchester, Will.i.am became emotional, stating that his return to the show was contingent on having "Tom’s blessing."
During an on-camera segment where coaches were asked to discuss the upcoming season, Will.i.am reportedly refused to speak first, crossing his arms "like a child." Kelly Rowland is said to have stepped in to fill the silence. The new lineup, which includes Cheryl and Aitch as new coaches, has reportedly created an atmosphere of "awkwardness" on set, overshadowing any excitement for the new additions.
ITV acknowledged Jones's departure in a statement, thanking him for his "years on The Voice UK, and the countless incredible and unforgettable moments he gave the show." The statement continued, "He has brought joy to audiences, and to every singer who performed for him and with him." However, Jones himself maintains that the decision was not his, attributing his dismissal to "a financial difficulty with insurance."
Stacey Solomon and Alesha Dixon are set to host the upcoming season, replacing Emma Willis, who will present Strictly Come Dancing.
Representatives for ITV and Will.i.am have been contacted for comment.
