Tom Cruise, 64, sports a drastically different look in the first trailer for his upcoming film, "Digger." The trailer, released Monday, shows the actor with thinning white hair and a prosthetic pot belly, portraying oil tycoon and billionaire Digger Rockwell.
Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, "Digger" follows the character's accidental role in triggering a global ecological crisis. The U.S. President, played by John Goodman, tasks Digger with saving the planet in the film, which is slated for release on October 22.
Fans have reacted to the trailer with surprise and enthusiasm, with many predicting an Oscar nomination for Cruise. Comments on social media included "Finally, a movie where Tom Cruise's most dangerous stunt is raw unfiltered acting" and "The Tom Cruise Oscar campaign is going to be LEGENDARY."
The film was shot in the U.K. over a six-month production period. The movie poster's tagline describes "Digger" as "a comedy of catastrophic proportions."
Cruise's co-stars include Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed, and Emma D'Arcy. Iñárritu, a four-time Oscar winner known for films such as "Birdman" and "The Revenant," also serves as a co-producer on "Digger."
Iñárritu previously commented on Cruise's transformation, stating, "The transformation he went through was astonishing. 'Alejandro, it took me 40 years to become this character,' he told me once. And I think we both know what it means to carry an entire career into a single moment like this. We both knew that throughout our journeys, we had never done anything even close to this.'
