Ron Shelton, the writer and director of the 1996 golf comedy "Tin Cup," has developed an idea for a sequel to the film, which celebrated its pearl anniversary this month. The movie, starring Kevin Costner, Don Johnson, and Rene Russo, was a box office success and remains the highest-grossing golf film ever made.
Shelton, also known for writing "White Men Can't Jump" and "Bull Durham," shared his sequel concept in an interview with Hampton Sheet Magazine. He stated that he was previously approached by a Broadway producer to adapt "Tin Cup" for the stage, though that project did not materialize. However, Shelton confirmed he has "a great [movie] sequel outline" that he described as a "next generation story."
"Tin Cup" was released by Warner Bros. The studio's archives could potentially be a home for the film and a potential sequel. Publisher Joan Jedell suggested that Paramount might also be interested, given its potential acquisition of Warner Bros. and its stated commitment to producing a high volume of films per year. Jedell noted the enduring appeal of Costner and Johnson, referencing Costner's own film "Field of Dreams" with the quote, "make the sequel and… they will come."
