Theo James, 41, has stated he is too old to take on the iconic role of James Bond, removing himself from the ongoing speculation about who will succeed Daniel Craig as the famed 007. The actor, known for his role in the Netflix series "The Gentlemen," expressed his decision in an interview with British GQ, noting that he is "definitely too old now" despite being younger than Craig was at the time of his final Bond film.

James also cited the intense public scrutiny and its potential impact on personal life and family as reasons for his reluctance. He recalled the overwhelming attention following the "Divergent" franchise and how he subsequently stepped back to pursue smaller projects and protect his privacy. "Imagine, suddenly, you and I cannot walk down the street. What that does to your children, who are trying to find themselves in the midst of hyper-scrutiny and fame," James said.

Amidst James's withdrawal, actor Jack Lowden is reportedly emerging as a frontrunner. Producers are said to be "strongly considering" the "Slow Horses" star, according to presenter Richard Osman on his podcast "The Rest Is Entertainment." Osman described Lowden, 36, as being a "good age" for the role, possessing "real Daniel Craig energy" and the capability for both action and humor. His co-host Marina Hyde agreed, emphasizing the need for an actor with longevity for the part.

Recent discussions also touched on public opinion versus producer decisions in casting Bond. Research indicates that public favorites like Tom Hardy and Henry Cavill, along with James Norton (who also ruled himself out due to age), differ from past casting choices. Both Osman and Hyde noted that prominent Bond actors, including Daniel Craig, were not initially the public's choice but proved successful.

Bond producer Amy Pascal stated that the casting process is being conducted very methodically, acknowledging the challenge of following Daniel Craig. Amazon MGM Studios confirmed in May that auditions were underway for the next James Bond, five years after Craig's last appearance. The studio has indicated that more "exciting 007 news" will be shared in the coming months. Insiders reported in late June that director Denis Villeneuve had begun contacting actors who had advanced to the next round of auditions.
