Theo James, star of the Netflix series "The Gentlemen," has directly addressed persistent rumors about Meghan Markle potentially joining the show for its third season. James, speaking with Town & Country, offered a blunt assessment, calling the speculation "mainly a lot of hot air."
When pressed about reports that the former royal might be cast, James instead quipped that Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, would be portraying his love interest. "Yes, Fergie is joining," he stated.
The show, which premiered its first season in March 2024, has been renewed for a third installment, according to Page Six. James indicated that the current focus is on promoting the second season, which premiered Thursday, with Season 3 development to follow.
"We’re going to expand the world, go to different countries," James told the outlet, referencing the overarching ambition for future episodes. "But in terms of the minutiae, I mean, it’s still very much up in the air."
Rumors surrounding Markle's potential involvement gained traction after Netflix boss Manda Levin's remarks at the Edinburgh TV Festival in August, where she stated, "All bets are off" when questioned about Markle. Deadline previously reported that Markle was being considered for an unspecified role that was "currently being written."
A source indicated that while "inquiries in the entertainment space recently and things she is considering" have occurred, "nothing is confirmed right now."
Markle and Prince Harry recently relocated back to the United Kingdom in August with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, six years after stepping down as senior royals. The family has reportedly been house hunting in the North Cotswolds and are expected to enroll their children in a prep school there.
