The X Factor is reportedly being considered for a return to ITV, seven years after it was last aired. According to sources, the network is in discussions with production company Talkback Thames about bringing the singing competition back in an effort to increase viewing figures.
During its peak, The X Factor attracted 19 million viewers and launched the careers of artists such as Leona Lewis and the band One Direction. The show was shelved by ITV after 15 series, following two spin-off programs, X Factor: Celebrity and X Factor: The Band.
Insiders suggest that ITV is keen on a revival with a modernized format, particularly after recent shows like "The Neighbourhood" and "The Fortune Hotel" reportedly received poor reviews. A source indicated that the broadcaster sees an opportunity to revitalize The X Factor, a program with a proven track record of success, by giving it a contemporary update.
The plan reportedly involves introducing a younger, fresher judging panel with new faces, while head judge Simon Cowell might take on a behind-the-scenes role. The aim is for the show's return to inject new life into ITV's entertainment schedule, especially on weekends when viewership is typically higher. This strategic move comes after what a source described as the "car crash" of "The Neighbourhood," a costly program that failed to perform well.
ITV has been contacted for comment regarding the potential return of The X Factor. The show has a history of featuring a diverse range of judges over the years, including Sharon Osbourne, Louis Walsh, Dannii Minogue, Cheryl, Gary Barlow, Tulisa, Kelly Rowland, Nicole Scherzinger, Mel B, Rita Ora, Ayda Field, Robbie Williams, and Louis Tomlinson. It was also hosted by personalities such as Kate Thornton, Dermot O'Leary, Caroline Flack, and Olly Murs.
Contestants on the show were typically divided into four categories: boys, girls, over-25s, and groups, and were mentored by the judges. The program became a significant fan favorite, producing successful musical acts like Olly Murs, Little Mix, One Direction, JLS, Leona Lewis, and James Arthur.
Earlier this year, it was reported that Simon Cowell had signed on for a new X Factor documentary, which was described by Sky as a definitive series exploring the show's cultural impact. The proposed revival of The X Factor aims to leverage the show's past success while updating its format to appeal to a contemporary audience, potentially incorporating elements relevant to the social media generation.
