The Voice UK is facing renewed scrutiny following the recent departure of veteran coach Sir Tom Jones, who claimed he was dismissed due to insurance issues and a desire to "refresh" the show. This incident adds to a history of controversies plaguing the competition, including allegations of internal conflict, accusations of fixed outcomes, and a significant decline in viewership since its 2012 debut.

Sir Tom Jones stated that he "did not want to leave The Voice as I love the show" and expressed that "there's never a good time to fire an 86-year-old who's still pretty good at his job." He also mentioned being offered a reduced role, which he was "not thrilled about." The show's producers reportedly cited financial difficulties with insurance as the reason for his dismissal, while also suggesting a need for a "refresh" with a new coaching lineup.

Amidst this upheaval, reports suggest Cheryl is slated to return to television as a judge, and Aitch may replace departing coaches Danny Jones and Tom Fletcher of McFly. The timing of these changes has drawn attention, as filming for the next series is set to commence while the current season has already been pre-recorded.

A History of Drama and Change

The Voice UK, which premiered in 2012 with an average of over seven million viewers, has seen its launch figures for the current series drop to just 1.9 million, marking its lowest point to date. The show has experienced a revolving door of coaches, with 18 different personalities having occupied the famous red chairs since its inception. Early seasons featured coaches like Will.i.am, Jessie J, Sir Tom Jones, and Danny O'Donoghue. Subsequent seasons saw numerous changes, including the arrivals and departures of Kylie Minogue, Ricky Wilson, Rita Ora, Boy George, Paloma Faith, Jennifer Hudson, Gavin Rossdale, Olly Murs, Meghan Trainor, Anne-Marie, LeAnn Rimes, Tom Fletcher, and Danny Jones.

Past controversies include an incident in season two where host Holly Willoughby's attire during the live final drew 139 complaints to Ofcom, with some viewers deeming her low-cut dress inappropriate for a family show. Although Ofcom did not investigate, the BBC issued an apology.

Internal conflicts have also been a recurring theme. Boy George and Paloma Faith, who coached together for one season, reportedly clashed during auditions. Paloma Faith later recounted an incident in her memoir where she alleged George made a sexist remark about her undergoing IVF treatment, which she claimed was cut from the broadcast. More recently, Boy George publicly criticized Paloma Faith for her support of Macklemore's "Free Palestine" statement, calling her stance "virtuous squealing."

Accusations of a "Fix"

The show has also been targeted by "fix" accusations. In 2016, Paloma Faith appeared to suggest that a decision to have Ricky Wilson "steal" former Liberty X singer Kevin Simm after he was eliminated from her team was pre-arranged. While producers denied any fix, they confirmed that Faith and Wilson had discussed the possibility of a steal beforehand. Kevin Simm went on to win that season.

In the same season, "fix" questions arose when frontrunner Cody Frost exited the competition early. Her mentor, Boy George, stated that both he and Frost were "pleased" with the outcome, as she did not wish to perform the winner's song. Producers clarified that Frost would not have to sing the winner's single, leading to speculation.

Sir Tom Jones himself experienced a previous controversial departure in 2015 when he and Rita Ora were replaced. At the time, the BBC announced the decision to drop Jones just as the new coaches were revealed. Jones expressed his disappointment in a public statement, calling the handling of his exit "sub-standard behavior" and stating he was informed "with no consultation or conversation of any kind." The BBC defended their timing, citing the need to keep new additions secret. Later, the BBC's television boss offered Jones an apology. Despite this, Jones returned to the panel when the show moved to ITV.
