Prime Video said The Summer I Turned Pretty will conclude with a feature film that expands the global franchise. Jenny Han, who wrote the coming-of-age trilogy on which the series is based, will return to write and direct the movie, billed as the final chapter of Belly's journey.
The third season dropped this week in the United States and United Kingdom, placing Belly at a crossroads between her ex-fiancé Jeremiah and his brother Conrad. Details about the film's storyline remain under wraps, but Amazon MGM Studios said the project will cap Belly's arc as part of the expansion of the franchise.
There is another big milestone left in Belly's journey, and the author believed only a movie could give it its proper due, Han said in a statement. She also thanked Prime Video for supporting her vision for the story and enabling her to share the final chapter with fans.
News of the film installment was announced during the Season 3 premiere celebration in Paris, held shortly after the series' emotional finale. Series star Lola Tung, who plays Belly, posed on the red carpet in front of a billboard announcing the film alongside Christopher Briney, who portrays Conrad.
Since its 2022 debut, The Summer I Turned Pretty has become a global sensation, known for its love triangle and multigenerational appeal, fueling a fervent fan following that sometimes spilled into online abuse directed at the show's stars. Han urged fans to act normal online in response to the chatter surrounding the series.
Courtenay Valenti of Amazon MGM Studios and Vernon Sanders of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios said the show has achieved extraordinary global success and celebrated the decision to partner again with Han for the next chapter.
The series is adapted from Han's coming-of-age trilogy and chronicles Belly's romance through the years, becoming a major cultural touchstone with discussions about Team Conrad vs Team Jeremiah dominating online discourse. The film is billed as an expansion that will conclude Belly's journey.
Details such as release date, cast, and production timeline were not disclosed, but executives indicated the project will be the final installment in Belly's story.
