The FX series "The Shards" delves into the complexities of memory and unreliable narration, particularly in its eighth episode, titled "Hamlet." The episode culminates in a highly ambiguous scene between young Bret Easton Ellis, portrayed by Igby Rigney, and Robert Mallory, played by Homer Gere. Viewers are left to question whether a pivotal intimate encounter between the two characters truly occurred or existed solely within Bret's perception.
The scene unfolds with Robert visiting Bret's room. Bret, convinced Robert is the "Trawler" serial killer targeting wealthy teens in Los Angeles, confronts him. Robert questions Bret's animosity, leading to a kiss and a subsequent sexual encounter. However, the morning after, Robert's cryptic "To be or not to be, that is the question" remark and the unnervingly neat state of the bedding cast doubt on the reality of the night's events.
This ambiguity is central to the episode's exploration of Bret's perspective as an unreliable narrator. The question of whether the sex scene was a hallucination or a genuine event is deliberately left open, prompting viewers to consider the nature of Bret's obsession with Robert and the overall truthfulness of his account.
Stars Homer Gere and Igby Rigney have offered contrasting views on the scene's significance. Gere suggests that if the encounter was real, it offers a form of catharsis, but he believes its potential absence creates even more tension. "I think if you look at it a certain way, it becomes kind of a key to the rest of the series—solving this kind of tension between Bret and Robert," Gere stated. "Is Bret telling the truth? Is Robert really as bad as she says? It’s all through his lens."
Rigney, however, holds a different interpretation. "I think Robert absolutely was in my bedroom and he just left early in the morning to get ready for school," Rigney said. "And made the bed as well, because he’s a gentleman."
Both actors acknowledge the scene's impact and their collaborative efforts during filming. The series finale of "The Shards" is scheduled to air on Wednesday, September 9, at 9 PM ET on FX and will stream simultaneously on Hulu.
