The Apple TV+ series "The Morning Show" will conclude its run with its upcoming fifth season, a development that has prompted emotional responses from its lead stars, Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.
Filming for the fifth and final season wrapped on Wednesday night, and the season is slated to premiere in 2027. Both Aniston and Witherspoon, who also serve as executive producers, were aware that this season would be the show's last. They shared their reflections and behind-the-scenes moments on social media shortly after Apple's announcement.
Reese Witherspoon posted an Instagram reel showcasing various moments from the show's production, including hugs with Aniston, a look at a plaque commemorating the series, and interactions with cast and crew. "Eight years ago, we decided to tell a story about the people who bring us the news... A story about ambition, truth, power," Witherspoon wrote. She emphasized the show's exploration of journalism, stating, "It has been a stellar creative experience - one I will always treasure."
Jennifer Aniston shared photos from the Los Angeles set on Instagram, including one where co-star Mark Duplass offered a consolatory hug to her and a visibly emotional Witherspoon. "Laughing and crying. Final season of @themorningshow incoming... MUCH more to come. @appletv," Aniston captioned her post. She added in a statement, "Going in knowing it would be our last, we were so fortunate to craft the conclusion with intentionality, and honor these characters the way they deserve." Aniston also highlighted Apple's support for their creative vision and praised the "insanely talented cast, and our extraordinary writers, producers and crew," noting the family atmosphere on set.
Witherspoon described "The Morning Show" as more than just a show about a newsroom, but a story about "why the newsroom matters. About freedom of the press, and the journalists who protect the fourth estate, often at great cost." She concluded by thanking all those involved, calling the experience "the creative privilege of my career."
The series, which premiered in 2019, explored the high-stakes world of morning television, tackling themes of ambition, power dynamics, and the complexities of the news industry. The final season will feature the return of cast members including Mark Duplass, Billy Crudup, Karen Pittman, Nicole Beharie, and Jon Hamm, alongside new additions such as Jeff Daniels, Renee Rapp, Jesse Williams, Sean Hayes, and Lizzy Caplan.
