Prince Harry’s brief return to the United Kingdom this month ended with signs of a thaw between the Duke of Sussex and his father, King Charles, but sources say the duke’s relationship with his brother Prince William and sister-in-law Kate Middleton remains strained.
The 41-year-old met Charles for what insiders described as peace talks during a four-day visit, and palace sources called the reunion "super positive and very relaxed." Still, multiple people familiar with the situation told entertainment outlets that William and Kate are "deeply hurt" by Harry's public disclosures — including passages in his 2023 memoir "Spare" and subsequent interviews — and are not yet ready to reconcile.
Those close to the Prince and Princess of Wales say there has been little or no direct communication between their aides and Harry since the duke’s return, in contrast to the apparent outreach that produced the meeting with the king. "There is still ongoing tension with William and Kate," one source told Us Weekly. "They are deeply hurt by the public disclosures, memoir revelations and interviews and criticisms of their roles, which they perceive as breaches of trust that require significant time to heal from, which is why they aren’t there yet."
The same source said William and Kate have not initiated or responded to contact from Harry, and described an "emotional distance" among the three. Insiders pointed to specific passages in "Spare" in which the duke commented on the princess, saying that those accounts left William "guarded and needing more time to process before a face-to-face" meeting.
Harry has defended his memoir, telling the Guardian that it was "not about revenge" or "dirty laundry" and that his conscience is clear. He said the book offered "a series of corrections to stories already out there" and described his intention as accountability rather than retribution.
The Sussexes stepped back from senior royal duties in 2020 and relocated to the United States, where they have since undertaken media and commercial projects that have frequently been the subject of public scrutiny in Britain. The family rift has been a recurring theme in coverage of the royal household, and the latest round of private meetings and public commentary appears to have narrowed the gap with the monarch while leaving sibling relations unresolved.
Representatives for Prince Harry, Prince William, the Prince and Princess of Wales and the palace did not immediately provide comment beyond previously published statements. Further engagement between the brothers and their spouses would depend, according to insiders, on time and additional private dialogue to rebuild trust after years of public disclosures.
