Taylor Sheridan, the creative force behind the hit series "Yellowstone," has confirmed that a planned spin-off, "6666," will not move forward. The decision stems from Sheridan's commitment to authenticity and his reluctance to fictionalize the lives of the actual people who work on the historic Texas ranch.
"I would never fictionalize that ranch," Sheridan stated on the podcast Rodeo Time. "Although people thought that that was gonna be, that's never gonna happen." He acquired the 6666 Ranch in 2022, fueling speculation about a series set on the property, a location previously featured in "Yellowstone" through the character Jimmy Hurdstrom, portrayed by Jefferson White.
Sheridan explained that creating storylines for a full spin-off would necessitate inventing dramas and fabricating lives, which he feels would trivialize the experiences of the real ranch hands and their families. "So now I have to invent a drama. We can't just watch a kid learn how to rope every single episode," he said. "So now I'm trivializing and fictionalizing something where real people work and they raise their families there, and I could never do that to them."
He expressed a protective stance over the ranch, emphasizing the significant responsibility of safeguarding its legacy. The 6666 Ranch, founded in 1870 by Samuel Burk Burnett, was owned by Anne Windfohr Marion until her death in 2020. Sheridan's investment group reportedly purchased the property for $320 million.
While "6666" has been canceled, other "Yellowstone" spin-offs are continuing. "Dutton Ranch," set in Texas and starring Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, has been renewed for a second season. Additionally, "Marshals," a spin-off featuring Luke Grimes, premiered in March. The franchise also includes period dramas "1923," with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, and "1883," starring Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.
Sheridan's prolific output also encompasses series such as "Landman" and "Lioness."
