Suzanne Shaw has revealed that becoming a grandmother at the age of 44 came as a significant surprise, as she had still been contemplating having another child of her own.
Shaw welcomed her grandson, Colton, in March. Her eldest son, Corey, 21, whom she shares with ex-boyfriend Darren Day, and his partner Erin Mitchell, 20, are Colton's parents. The singer and actress also has a 10-year-old son, Rafferty, with her former partner of 11 years, businessman Sam Greenfield.
Shaw's announcement of her grandmother status came just two months after her sudden split from Greenfield. She admitted to The Mirror that the news of her grandson's arrival was unexpected, as she and Greenfield had been discussing the possibility of having a third child together.
"Sam and I were still talking about it, so it was getting my head around that being off the cards," Shaw told the publication. She has not disclosed the specific reasons for her separation from Greenfield but described the experience as "tough" and a "loss of what I didn't think I'd ever lose." Shaw expressed hope for healing and a smooth co-parenting relationship with Greenfield, aiming to ensure it functions as well as possible.
A Renewed Connection
One unexpected positive outcome from her grandson's arrival has been a reconciliation with her ex-partner, Darren Day. The two have been on friendly terms for some time, communicating about their son Corey, but have become more frequently in touch following the birth of Colton.
"They do say time heals," Shaw explained, reflecting on their improved relationship. "We've been on good terms for a long time now and still message each other regarding Corey. Now, with the new baby, we're in touch a lot more."
Shaw described sharing the moment of becoming grandparents together at the hospital as "really special." She and Day, who had a relationship around 2003, were engaged and dated for approximately 18 months. They separated three months after Corey's birth.
Their past relationship was marked by difficulty, particularly after Day left Shaw and their seven-week-old son Corey on Mother's Day in 2005, while Shaw was reportedly dealing with postnatal depression. At the time, he was reported to have said, "I don't do family."
Shaw previously spoke about this period on Vanessa Feltz's Channel 5 show, stating that Day had "pretty much went out to get a curry and didn't come back," and that her subsequent postnatal depression was "no surprise."
Despite their tumultuous history, Shaw and Day have maintained cordial co-parenting for years. Day later married Stephanie Dooley, divorcing her in 2019. He is currently engaged to his girlfriend Sophie Ladds.
