FX's comedy series "Adults" has surprise-released a prequel episode titled "Marathon Day" on July 31, offering a look into how the main characters met ahead of the show's second season.

The episode, which serves as an origin story for the character Paul Baker, dropped at 1 p.m. ET on FXX and is available for streaming on Hulu. The surprise announcement was made by series creators Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw at the "Adults" Season 2 premiere during the Tribeca Festival in June.

"We’re so excited for the opportunity to show fans how this friend group came to be," the creators stated in a press release. "We love a good origin story, and we can’t wait for you to see where the radioactive spider bit Paul Baker."

Season 2 of "Adults" is scheduled to premiere on August 27, with all eight episodes expected to be released on Hulu on that date. The new season will explore the current dynamics of the group, including the recent marriage of Anton (Owen Thiele) and Paul Baker (Jack Innanen), Paul Baker's ongoing relationship with Issa (Amita Rao), and Anton's feelings for Paul Baker.

For those looking to stream the prequel episode, Hulu offers a basic plan with ads for $11.99 per month, or an ad-free version for $18.99 per month. Bundles including Hulu are also available through Disney+, starting at $12.99 per month for an ad-supported Disney+ and Hulu plan, up to $32.99 per month for ad-free Disney+, Hulu, and Max. The episode can also be accessed via a free trial of DIRECTV, which includes FXX in some of its streaming packages.
