Senior showbusiness reporter Alex Doyle experienced a week-long voyage through the Norwegian fjords aboard MSC Cruises' Virtuosa, which featured dance instruction from Shirley Ballas, head judge of the BBC's 'Strictly Come Dancing'. Passengers had the opportunity to participate in dance classes led by Ballas, replicating elements of the "Strictly" experience, including learning choreographed steps and receiving tutelage on footwork.
Onboard Entertainment and Activities
The cruise offered a range of entertainment, including West End-style productions such as "Mamma Mia" and "Dirty Dancing in Concert" at the ship's theatre. The vessel also featured a casino, Formula One simulators, a kids' club, and indoor pools. Social events included themed parties at sea each evening and opportunities for passengers to interact with Ballas.
Ballas also presided over a competitive dance event held in the ship's Galleria Virtuosa, a main foyer with an expansive LED ceiling. During this competition, she offered critiques on timing and musical synchronization, drawing audible gasps from the audience, reminiscent of her role on the television show.
Beyond the dance-focused activities, the ship provided other amenities, including 20 bars and lounges, and a robotic bartender. For excursions, Doyle participated in a three-hour kayaking trip in Kristiansund, navigating waters near sea cliffs and a lighthouse. The return journey included a stop at the onboard spa for a Balinese massage.
Star Lineup Continues
Ballas's appearance is part of a planned series of celebrity guests on MSC Cruises. Future sailings are scheduled to feature rugby legends Ben Cohen, Neil Back, and Ben Kay, as well as dance star Kristina Rhianoff, and former footballer Gianfranco Zola. A 12-night 'Rugby Legends' cruise to the Canary Islands is scheduled to depart on August 8, with fares starting from £1,279 per person.
