Strictly Come Dancing Unveils New Hosts and Judges Amidst Presenter Nerves and Cast Shake-up

Strictly Come Dancing has released its first official look at the new hosting team and the returning judging panel ahead of the upcoming launch show. New hosts Emma Willis, Josh Widdicombe, and professional dancer Johannes Radebe, alongside judges Craig Revel Horwood, Shirley Ballas, Motsi Mabuse, and Anton Du Beke, were pictured together.

Appearing on The One Show, comedian Josh Widdicombe confessed to feeling a "ball of fear" as the show's premiere approaches. "It's nerve-wracking, we've been waiting for so long to do this," he stated. "But since the launch I just want people to see it. Can we just show it now?"

Johannes Radebe, who is transitioning to a co-presenting role, expressed a sense of "fomo" (fear of missing out) regarding the dancing, admitting, "The fomo is real!" Radebe also hinted at the mystery surrounding his new role, encouraging viewers to "tune in to find out."

The upcoming series will feature an innovative dance routine during the launch episode where all couples will switch partners. Emma Willis explained the concept: "There's much more movement, they've never done it before. There's 3 groups of 5 and they'll have their own dance. They are paired and it's like speed dancing. They're all learned a routine. The music will start, they will dance, and then they switch. And they do five or so seconds and then 30, and they switch."

This season marks a significant overhaul for the BBC dancing competition, with the departure of long-time hosts Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly. The new trio of hosts, Willis, Widdicombe, and Radebe, were announced in May.

The celebrity lineup for the 24th series includes a diverse range of personalities from television, sports, and social media. Among the confirmed contestants are Dani Dyer, Lacey Turner, Melanie Walters, Delta Goodrem, Will Best, Chris Appleton, Jaime Winstone, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Dame Sarah Storey, Tabby Stoecker, Cach Mercer, Bethany Antonia, Graeme Hall, Lawrence Robb, and John Nellis.

Reports suggest that nine of the 15 celebrity contestants have prior dance or performance experience, leading to some criticism from viewers. Stars like Emmerdale's Lawrence Robb, Love Island winner Cach Mercer, and EastEnders' Lacey Turner have backgrounds in dance training or performing arts.

The BBC's casting strategy for this series appears to be shifting towards influencers and personalities with large social media followings, mirroring a tactic employed by its US counterpart, Dancing With The Stars. This approach aims to attract a younger demographic.

Social media stars like celebrity hairdresser Chris Appleton, who has 4 million Instagram followers, and sports YouTuber John Nellis, with 15.7 million YouTube subscribers, have been cast. This strategy also seems to extend to the professional dancers, with some pros possessing larger online followings reportedly being favored.

Strictly Come Dancing is scheduled to begin on Saturday, September 19th, at 7:25 p.m. on BBC One.
