Steve Jones has revealed that he once saved rapper P. Diddy’s life after Diddy jumped into the sea aboard a boat in St Tropez and realized he couldn’t swim. The Welsh television presenter made the admission on a 2017 episode of the BBC panel show Would I Lie To You?, long before the rapper’s later legal controversies were publicly known.
According to Jones’s retelling on the program, Diddy boarded the yacht as part of a party with a mutual friend who owns a boat, Derek Evans from Pontypridd. The night spiraled into a raucous party, and the following morning Diddy woke up hungover and decided to go for a dip. He reportedly told Jones he was hungry, ate a large bowl of pasta for lunch, and then swam into the sea to cool off. At some point, he realized he could not swim and began calling for help. Jones said he then swam to Diddy, grabbed him around the chest, and towed him back to the boat via the ladder, helping him back aboard and getting him to safety. "You're OK, calm down," Jones recalled telling the rapper as he brought him to the ladder, while Diddy responded with thanks.
The account was not immediately taken at face value. On Would I Lie To You?, the other panelists—David Mitchell, Rob Brydon, and Fiona Bruce—voted that the tale was a lie. Jones then concluded the anecdote by insisting, "It is true." The moment has since resurfaced in coverage of Diddy and Jones’s public profiles, underscoring a long-running curiosity about the rapper’s circle and the high-society parties in the South of France during that era.
Separately, Diddy’s legal case has dominated headlines in recent years. In October, he faces up to 20 years in prison on charges connected to transportation to engage in prostitution, according to prosecutors tied to his federal case. He was acquitted on the more serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering after a federal trial concluded earlier this year. The split verdict has continued to draw attention to the complexities of the case and the differing outcomes on related counts. The October hearing will determine whether the two transportation convictions stand and what sentence will accompany them, if any.
The Would I Lie To You? reveal sits within a broader arc of Diddy’s public life, including business ventures, music career, and a long history of media fascination with his personal life. Jones’s anecdote also highlights the close-knit social scenes around Caribbean and Mediterranean party circuits in which crossovers between entertainment figures and media personalities are commonplace. The public archive of the episode, and its later re-emergence in discussions about Diddy, illustrates how old confessional moments can re-enter the public discourse in the wake of new developments in a celebrity’s life.
