Stephen Graham kissed his wife, Hannah Walter, at the Governors Ball following a night in which the Netflix limited series Adolescence collected eight Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and individual acting, writing and directing honours.

Graham, 52, won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his portrayal of Eddie Miller and shared the award for Best Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie with Jack Thorne. He embraced Walter, who has a production credit on the series and appears briefly on screen, before posing with his trophies as cast and crew celebrated in Los Angeles.

The series also produced a historic win for its young star Owen Cooper, 15, who became the youngest male performer to win a primetime Emmy when he took home Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Cooper filmed Adolescence at 14 and received a standing ovation as he accepted the award from presenter Sydney Sweeney. He told the audience that the prize belonged to "the people behind the camera and Stephen and all the cast," and said the experience proved the value of stepping outside one’s comfort zone.

Erin Doherty won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her role as child psychologist Briony Ariston, and Philip Barantini earned the directing award for a limited series for Adolescence. The show finished the night with eight wins from 13 nominations and had already secured Emmys for cinematography and casting in pre-show awards.

Walter, 48, who appears in episode two as Mrs. Bailey — a teacher at Bruntwood Academy — is credited as both an actress and a producer on the four-part drama. She and Graham were joined at the Governors Ball by their children, who posed with several of the show's awards.

Adolescence follows the story of schoolboy Jamie Miller after he is accused of murdering a female classmate following exposure to extreme misogynistic material online. The series, produced for Netflix, has averaged roughly 45 million views per month and drew attention for its one-take filming style and its focus on online radicalisation among teenagers.

Accepting his lead-actor award, Graham referenced his upbringing, saying in part that being recognised by his peers was "the most humbling thing." Thorne, who co-wrote the series, used his acceptance to single out the young performers who helped anchor the drama.

Cooper, who was granted a week off by his school to travel to Los Angeles, said he planned to fly back to the U.K. immediately after the ceremony to resume studies and prepare for GCSEs. He joked during a television appearance ahead of the ceremony about balancing homework with the Emmy night and described the reception he had received from classmates.

Beyond Adolescence, the ceremony honoured a range of programming across broadcast and streaming platforms. The Pitt won Outstanding Drama Series and Noah Wyle earned Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Britt Lower won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Severance, and Katherine LaNasa took Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for The Pitt. On the comedy side, The Studio and its writer-director-producer-star Seth Rogen won multiple awards, with The Studio taking Outstanding Comedy Series and Rogen winning Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series.

Other British nominees who were passed over included Aimee Lou Wood and Jason Isaacs for their roles in The White Lotus, and Bella Ramsey for The Last of Us. Scottish entertainer Alan Cumming accepted the award for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program for Traitors US.

The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards recognised a broad slate of winners: Andor and The Pitt were among the dramas acknowledged, The Studio led the comedy winners, and Last Week Tonight With John Oliver secured Outstanding Scripted Variety Series. The ceremony, which honours achievements across scripted, unscripted and variety television, showcased a mix of established stars and emerging talent on its stage in Los Angeles.
