Millions across the country turned their attention to the sky to witness a significant solar eclipse, with many celebrities among those gathering to observe the phenomenon. The event saw the moon obscure up to 96 percent of the sun, with some areas experiencing near-complete darkness.
The timing of the eclipse coincided with the peak of the annual Perseids meteor shower, adding another celestial spectacle to the night. TV personalities Roman Kemp and Alex Jones, hosts of "The One Show," showcased matching protective glasses as they prepared to broadcast a special episode focused on the eclipse. Kemp shared a photo on Instagram of himself and Jones wearing the eyewear, highlighting a shortage that left many unable to find proper visors.
Other notable figures also participated in the viewing. England Lioness Chloe Kelly shared her excitement, stating she was "locked in" to watch, also displaying her protective glasses. Ronan Keating offered a different kind of tribute, serenading the sun from his balcony. Paddy McGuinness opted for a DIY approach, sharing an image of a pinhole projector he constructed to safely view the eclipse.
However, the popularity of the event and the shortage of specialized viewing equipment led to some creative, albeit less conventional, methods of observation. Comedian John Bishop revealed on social media that he resorted to using a colander after visors were unavailable.
Authorities had previously issued warnings about potential distractions for drivers due to the eclipse, anticipating traffic disruptions. For those who missed this particular celestial display, the next eclipse of similar depth visible in the UK is not expected until 2050, with a total solar eclipse anticipated in 2090.
