The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is set to expand this weekend with the release of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," a film that analysts project could achieve one of the biggest box office debuts ever. Some forecasts suggest an opening weekend exceeding $300 million, which would place it among the top-tier openings in film history.
Tom Holland reprises his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, navigating the aftermath of events from "Spider-Man: No Way Home." The new film picks up four years after the previous installment, which saw Doctor Strange altering reality to protect the multiverse.
While the highest projections hover around $300 million, most industry analysts are anticipating an opening between $260 million and $280 million from approximately 4,300 North American theaters. Sony Pictures, the film's distributor, has a more conservative estimate of $190 million to $195 million. However, even the lower end of the analyst projections, $260 million, would surpass the $260.1 million opening of "Spider-Man: No Way Home," making "Brand New Day" potentially the second-highest opening weekend in box office history.
To achieve the record for the biggest debut, "Brand New Day" would need to surpass Marvel's "Avengers: Endgame," which opened to $357.1 million in April 2019. The film is on track to be one of only ten films ever to debut over $200 million, joining titles such as "Avengers: Infinity War" ($257.6 million), "Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens" ($247.9 million), and "Black Panther" ($202 million).
Internationally, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" is also expected to perform strongly, with projections ranging from $275 million to $300 million. This is particularly notable as the film is set for a day-and-date release in China, a market from which "Spider-Man: No Way Home" was absent.
The preceding "Spider-Man" trilogy, starring Holland, showed consistent growth at the box office. "Spider-Man: Homecoming" (2017) grossed $334.9 million domestically and $545.9 million internationally. Its sequel, "Spider-Man: Far From Home" (2019), improved upon these numbers with $391.2 million domestic and $741.4 million international. "Spider-Man: No Way Home" (2021) was a major success, earning $814.8 million domestically and $1.92 billion worldwide.
"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" features a returning cast including Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, and Jon Bernthal as The Punisher. Sadie Sink joins the cast in a new role, with speculation suggesting she could portray Gwen Stacy or Jean Grey.
The film's main box office competition this weekend will be Magnolia Pictures' "I Want Your Sex."
