Country singer Spencer Hatcher has broken his public silence weeks after his mother was killed during a home invasion in Harrisonburg, Virginia. In a video posted to Instagram on Sept. 9, Hatcher thanked fans for the love and support shown to his family during what he described as the worst time of their lives. He said his mom, Holly Hatcher, was his biggest fan and supporter in everything he did, and he expressed gratitude for the messages he has received as he begins to move forward with his music career.

The invasion occurred just before midnight on Aug. 3 at the Hatchers’ Harrisonburg home. Holly Hatcher, 62, was killed during the attack, and her husband, Michael Hatcher, 65, was wounded but managed to retrieve a handgun from his car and fatally shoot the intruder, identified by authorities as Kevin Moses Walker, 41. Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson described the attack as highly unusual and apparently random, with no prior known history of violent behavior for Walker. The sheriff noted that Walker had purchased a sleeping bag and a knife at a Walmart two days before the assault and had rented a campsite at Endless Caverns in New Market, about 20 miles north of the home. Police found Walker’s car abandoned after the incident, and he was later found dead in the driveway when Michael Hatcher contacted authorities.

But I’m doing it a lot because I know that’s what my mom would want me to do. She loved the music and the shows, and after a lot of thought and prayer and speaking with my label about continuing on, I’ve made the decision that I want to continue making music and bringing smiles to people’s faces and being out on stage and everything. We’re going to keep pushing forward as hard as we can, and I hope you’ll ride this journey with me as I get back on the road and back into the studio.

The investigation and timeline released by authorities show the day after the home invasion, felony warrants were issued for Walker as investigators followed leads tied to Endless Caverns, where his camp site listed in records had been broken into and his vehicle found abandoned. Police did not locate Walker until after the Hollies’ family called in the incident, leading to the intruder’s death in the driveway when Michael Hatcher acted in self-defense. Authorities emphasized that the case remained unusual and random, with no indication of a pattern of violence in Walker’s past.

Hatcher has been active in music for years, and the tragedy appears to have influenced his decision to return to touring. The singer, known for songs like Drink You Gone, indicated that he would resume performances and press engagements as soon as possible. His website’s tour section shows nearly a dozen performances booked through the end of the year, with plans to participate in radio interviews and other promotional events as part of a broader return to the road.

In describing his mother’s influence on his career, Hatcher highlighted her role as a rural Virginia teacher for almost two decades. He said that continuing to perform is a way to honor her memory and celebrate the life she lived, both through his music and the joy she found in watching him perform. He urged fans to join him on this new chapter, emphasizing that the family’s love and resilience would guide his artistic path going forward.

Images accompanying the story show Hatcher in moments of public address and in performance settings, reflecting the balance he’s trying to strike between public life and private grief. His supporters have organized an outpouring of messages of encouragement as he navigates a path forward in the wake of the loss.
