Joe Gannascoli, who portrayed Vito Spatafore on HBO's "The Sopranos," is undertaking a significant health and fitness transformation, aiming to shed 40 pounds for an upcoming television project. The actor, who has been open about his past struggles with weight and gambling, is adopting a rigorous routine that includes early morning golf, pickleball, and weight training, alongside a disciplined diet.
Gannascoli, 67, plans to drop from 250 pounds to around 210 pounds. This goal is tied to a new TV project based on his Mafia-themed cookbook, "A Meal to Die For." He anticipates reaching his target weight in approximately four months.
His daily regimen begins with a 6 a.m. round of golf, followed by pickleball sessions. After his athletic activities, Gannascoli heads to the gym four times a week, focusing on hitting all major muscle groups with heavier weights and fewer repetitions to achieve a substantial sweat. Complementing his physical efforts, he practices intermittent fasting, typically not eating after 2 p.m., and engages in "salad binges," while limiting red meat consumption.
This current health push is a departure from his earlier attempts. During the filming of "The Sopranos," Gannascoli reached his heaviest weight of 400 pounds, which contributed to hip problems and sleep apnea. A subsequent lap band surgery and hip surgeries led writers to incorporate his substantial weight loss into the show's sixth season plotline. However, maintaining the weight loss proved challenging in the years that followed due to his work as a private chef and brand ambassador.
Gannascoli attributes the success of his current regimen to improved nutrition and a more consistent athletic lifestyle. "I feel better and look better than I did back on the show," he stated.
In addition to his physical transformation, Gannascoli recently announced he has quit gambling after 50 years. This addiction had previously led to the loss of his restaurant, 101 Seafood, in the early 1990s after a significant financial setback from betting on NFL games. The financial fallout from gambling ultimately spurred his move to Los Angeles to pursue acting.
Character Arc Development
Gannascoli is also credited with influencing a pivotal character arc for his on-screen persona. He proposed the idea for Vito Spatafore's storyline as a closeted gay Mafioso, inspired by a real-life case he had read about. The "Sopranos" writing staff initially mulled over the suggestion before informing him of the plot development during a table read.
