Simon Cowell is reportedly scheduled to undergo back surgery, approximately six years after a severe e-bike accident in 2020 left him with a broken back and fearing he might never walk again. The incident occurred while Cowell was testing an electric bike at his home in Malibu, California.

Following the crash, Cowell underwent extensive surgery, including the insertion of a metal rod to stabilize his back. Reports suggest this upcoming procedure will necessitate his absence from filming "America's Got Talent" for several weeks.

Cowell has previously spoken about the severity of the accident. In an interview on the "How To Fail" podcast, he revealed that his surgeon had shown him X-rays and expressed uncertainty about his ability to fix the injury, warning that he might not walk again and that the operation could take up to 11 hours. The possibility of complications was also a significant concern.

The music mogul described the accident as a major "wake-up call" regarding his previous lifestyle, which he characterized as "crazy." He stated that the experience led him to re-evaluate his priorities, recognizing that his health was paramount. This realization prompted a significant overhaul of his lifestyle, including a focus on family and a better work-life balance.

Cowell has since reported feeling fitter than before the accident. He has lost a significant amount of weight and has curbed his smoking habit, which at its peak involved as many as 80 cigarettes per day. He has also adjusted his work schedule, no longer working past 6 p.m. or on his days off.

The accident occurred when the e-bike Cowell had imported from England performed a large wheelie due to the throttle's power, throwing him several feet into the air. He landed on his back and immediately suspected he had broken it, though he was relieved he could still move his hands and feet.
