Hemlines are rising as micro-shorts emerge as a dominant trend in Hollywood this summer. Celebrities like Charli XCX, Charlize Theron, and Jennifer Lopez have been seen sporting the abbreviated style, signaling its popularity among fashion-forward figures.
Charli XCX recently showcased a pair of buttoned hot pants at a Los Angeles event. Charlize Theron opted for silky Tom Ford tap shorts while promoting "The Odyssey," and Jennifer Lopez was spotted in Sicily wearing floral bloomers from Dolce & Gabbana during a vacation.
The trend extends to younger stars as well. Hunter Schafer of "Euphoria" layered sheer Marc Jacobs short shorts over a bodysuit at Comic-Con, and influencer Alix Earle was seen in the Hamptons wearing low-slung cashmere Versace boyshorts.
Swedish pop star Zara Larsson has made very short shorts a signature part of her wardrobe. Her stylist, Caterina Ospina, told Page Six Style that Larsson is drawn to bold, fun, and unexpected pieces that allow her to feel "sexy, free and confident."
Onstage, Larsson elevates the look with embellishments. At Denmark's Roskilde Festival in early July, she performed in a custom Rotate Birger Christensen outfit featuring fringed halter top and sparkling turquoise hot pants. Throughout her "Midnight Sun" tour, she has worn crystal-encrusted shorts reminiscent of Britney Spears' 2001 "Slave 4 U" VMAs costume.
While crystal-encrusted shorts might be best suited for performance, Ospina suggests that the trend can be adapted for everyday wear. "For someone who isn’t a pop star, it’s all about balance and making the trend your own," she said. Ospina recommends pairing short shorts with an oversized blazer or a relaxed shirt, and adding playful details like colorful belts or layered accessories.
For those concerned about coverage, Ospina suggests layering tights beneath shorts. The key, she emphasizes, is finding shorts that are comfortable and secure, and ultimately, having fun with the style to ensure the look feels personal.
Other celebrities embracing the trend include Megan Thee Stallion and Tyla, who has been seen in folded-over cutoffs.
