Shaun White and Nina Dobrev have called off their engagement and ended their five-year relationship, a person close to the couple told The Associated Press on Friday. The decision was mutual, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. People magazine first reported the breakup.

White, 39, and Dobrev, 36, went public with their relationship in 2020 and shared occasional glimpses of their life together on social media. One early Instagram post, near the start of the COVID-19 lockdown, showed Dobrev giving White a "quarantine haircut." The couple announced their engagement in October 2024 with a photograph of White kneeling in front of Dobrev at a New York restaurant surrounded by white rose petals and candles; White captioned the post, "She said YES," with a diamond ring emoji.

The pair supported each other's professional endeavors during their relationship. Dobrev was a public presence during White's campaign to qualify for what he said would be his fifth and final Olympics in 2022, when he finished fourth in Beijing. White later credited Dobrev with encouraging him to make a retirement to-do list to prepare for life after competition. White was likewise present at the Los Angeles premiere of Dobrev's Netflix film "The Out-Laws" in 2023.

People reported the couple was seen together in public as recently as Aug. 31. Dobrev was photographed walking a red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival last week without an engagement ring.

Since stepping back from Olympic competition, White has focused on developing The Snow League, a professional halfpipe circuit he has said is intended to create more opportunities for athletes in the sport. Dobrev has been linked to a film project, reportedly cast to star in a romantic comedy adaptation of Tessa Bailey's novel "It Happened One Summer."

The Associated Press reached out to representatives for White and Dobrev for comment; neither immediately responded to requests. The person who confirmed the split to the AP emphasized that the decision to part ways was mutual and did not offer further details on timing or reasons.

The announcement ends one of the more public celebrity pairings of the past half-decade, marked by joint appearances, social-media posts and visible support at events tied to each other's careers. Further developments were not immediately reported.
