Shaun White, 39, and Nina Dobrev, 36, have ended their engagement and split after five years together, a source told People. The decision came less than a year after White proposed in October 2024.

The source described the split as mutual and said it was made "with love and a deep respect for one another," adding that the former couple remain supportive despite choosing different paths. The two were last seen together in public on Aug. 31, when they were photographed holding hands while running errands in Los Angeles. Dobrev attended the premiere of Eternity during the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 7 without her five-carat engagement ring and has since unpinned the Instagram post showing White's candlelit proposal.

White and Dobrev began dating in 2020 and frequently shared moments from their relationship on social media and in interviews, from joint travels to public support at each other's events. In January 2024, Dobrev told People that the pair set aside time for weekly "date night," alternating who planned the evening as a way to keep their relationship "exciting and interesting." She noted that White's training and travel schedule around the Olympics often required her to travel to meet him.

Their engagement drew widespread attention after an elaborate proposal in New York City. White popped the question at The Golden Swan with a five-carat ring by Lorraine Schwartz. After initial plans to propose fell through, White reportedly hid the ring around their home in several places before ultimately arranging a ruse to bring Dobrev to the restaurant. Dobrev later described to Vogue how a faux invitation to an intimate dinner with Anna Wintour led her to the venue, where White was waiting on one knee. Social-media posts at the time captured White posting "She said YES!" and Dobrev writing, "RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé."

Throughout their relationship the couple balanced public appearances with private moments. They accompanied one another to events and often highlighted how they supported each other's careers. The People source said the split was not taken lightly and emphasized that both remain supportive as they transition to separate lives.

Neither party has released an extended public statement beyond social-media adjustments following the announcement of their engagement last year. Coverage of the couple's relationship and its end stems from public appearances, social-media activity and accounts provided to news outlets.

Shaun White, an Olympic gold-medal-winning snowboarder and skateboarder, and Nina Dobrev, an actor best known for her work on The Vampire Diaries, rose to prominence in different fields before their relationship began in 2020. Their split marks the end of a high-profile pairing that had been a frequent subject of entertainment coverage since the engagement was announced in 2024.
