Shaun White and Nina Dobrev have ended their engagement and their relationship after five years together, the actors announced through people familiar with the matter and media reports on Thursday.
The couple, who began dating in 2019, were engaged in October 2024. A source told People that the split "was mutual and made with love and a deep respect for one another," and that both remain supportive of each other as they pursue separate paths.
The two were last photographed together on Aug. 31, 2025, holding hands while running errands in Los Angeles. In the days after, Dobrev attended the Sept. 7 premiere of Eternity during the Toronto International Film Festival without the five-carat diamond engagement ring, and she has unpinned the Instagram post that documented White's candlelit proposal.
White, 39, is a multiple Olympic gold medalist in snowboarding; Dobrev, 36, rose to fame on the television series The Vampire Diaries. Throughout their relationship the couple frequently shared moments from trips and public outings. In a January 2024 interview with People, Dobrev described a weekly date-night routine the pair used to "keep things sort of exciting and interesting," and noted that White's training and travel commitments around the Olympics meant she often traveled to meet him.
Their engagement in October 2024 came after several years of an on-again, steady relationship that began in 2019. Public-facing posts and appearances over the period had shown the couple supporting each other's careers and traveling together; they did not publicly provide details about the reasons for the split beyond the mutual, respectful characterization offered to People.
Representatives for White and Dobrev did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Media outlets first reported the development on Thursday, and social-media activity around the pair has shifted since Dobrev's appearance at the Toronto festival.
The announcement closes a chapter in a high-profile relationship that drew attention both for the prominence of White's athletic career and for Dobrev's film and television work. Both have continued professional commitments that will keep them in the public eye in the months ahead.
