Shaun White and Nina Dobrev have ended their engagement and romantic relationship after five years together, People reported Thursday.

A person close to the couple told People that "it was a mutual decision, and wasn't an easy one, but it was made with love and a deep respect for one another." Representatives for White and Dobrev did not immediately respond to requests for comment from HuffPost.

The separation comes after a relationship that was first publicly linked in late 2019. The pair went public in May 2020, when White posted images that included Dobrev giving him a haircut while the couple was in COVID-19 lockdown. White proposed to Dobrev at New York's Golden Swan restaurant in October of last year.

Signs of a change in the couple's public presentation emerged in recent weeks. The two were photographed walking hand in hand in Los Angeles on Aug. 31, and Dobrev included a photo of herself relaxing in bed with White in an end-of-summer Instagram carousel. By the time Dobrev attended the Toronto International Film Festival last week for the premiere of the film "Eternity," she did not appear to be wearing an engagement ring. People also noted that images from the couple's engagement were no longer pinned to the top of Dobrev's Instagram account.

Dobrev posted a brief, cryptic TikTok in which she lip-synced to audio of two women discussing how to "fix" a man, and she has reduced public references to the relationship on social media. When asked in March by E! News why the couple had not immediately begun wedding planning, Dobrev said the pair were "just enjoying being engaged at this point and being in that sort of phase," adding that she wanted to "enjoy it and not rush that process." White previously joked on Instagram about Dobrev giving him a haircut, writing, "My hairstylist said he wouldn't, so she did."

White is a professional snowboarder and three-time Olympic gold medalist. Dobrev is an actor best known for her role as Elena Gilbert on the television series "The Vampire Diaries." Few additional details about the split were available on Thursday, and both parties' representatives had not provided comment to media outlets at the time of publication.
