Shane Richie is set to take a break from EastEnders after landing the lead role in Theatre Royal Plymouth’s Christmas pantomime Dick Whittington, a move that will see the Alfie Moon actor away from Albert Square for a winter run. The 61-year-old actor has played Alfie on and off since 2002 and will headline the Plymouth production, which runs from December 12 to January 10.

Richie will be joined in the cast by musical theatre performers Anne Smith and Emily Beth Harrington, with the festive show described as a highlight of the theatre’s seasonal lineup. A source told The Sun that the break from the soap will be brief and should not derail Alfie’s time on screen, noting that the absence will largely be covered by the cast’s own festive break. The Daily Mail has contacted the BBC for comment, but there was no statement from the broadcaster at publication.

This break comes as other high-profile TV projects contend with demanding rehearsal schedules. Balvinder Sopal, known to EastEnders fans as Suki Panesar, revealed she had sustained an injury after just two days of Strictly Come Dancing rehearsals, posting that something popped during training and that she would be seeing physio. She later reported that she was fine, with the issue centered on the left hip and glute and that she would continue dancing with care.

The entertainment schedule this season reflects a broader trend of actors juggling multiple high-profile commitments across stage and screen. Last year’s Strictly Come Dancing champions, Dianne Buswell and Chris McCausland, were also highlighted in recent episodes as they prepared for the show's launch episodes, underscoring how crossovers between TV and live performance remain a centerpiece of the season.

Shane Richie's theatre stint underscores the appeal of pantomime as a proving ground for established TV actors during the holidays, when audiences seek traditional family entertainment. The Theatre Royal Plymouth production runs through January 10, offering a break from the soap for its star and a seasonal showcase for the region’s theatre scene.
