Actor Shane Richie, 62, has been charged with drink-driving following an incident at a petrol station in Harlow, Essex. Richie was seen leaving the set of the BBC soap opera "EastEnders" in north London, where he plays Alfie Moon. He is scheduled to appear in court next month.
The charges stem from an event on July 29, when Richie was reportedly challenged by petrol station staff for vaping on the premises. Footage from the incident, which occurred shortly after 11 p.m., shows an exchange where Richie is told vaping is prohibited due to potential fire risks, similar to smoking. Richie reportedly responded aggressively to staff.
Following the altercation, police were called to the scene, and Richie was subsequently arrested and charged. Legally, an individual charged with drink-driving can continue to drive until convicted in court. Richie was seen driving home from filming "EastEnders" on the day the charges were reported.
Reports suggest that those close to Richie are concerned about his well-being, with one source telling The Sun that the actor might be "spiralling" due to the demands of his workload. The source indicated that Richie has been under significant pressure due to his role as landlord of the Queen Vic pub in "EastEnders," which requires constant filming, and upcoming tour rehearsals. The source also stated that Richie often turns to drink when stressed.
There is speculation that BBC bosses may not handle the incident lightly, with suggestions that Richie could face suspension from the soap. He has made no secret of his struggles with alcohol when under stress.
