A sequel to the forthcoming reimagining of Cliffhanger is already in development, Deadline reported, even though the new film has not yet reached theaters. Producers Rocket Science and Thank You Pictures are working on the follow-up, and early talks around the project are circulating at the Toronto International Film Festival market, the report said.
The new Cliffhanger — directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and currently in post-production — stars Lily James and Pierce Brosnan. Brosnan plays Ray Cooper, a veteran mountaineer who runs a luxury chalet in the Dolomites with his daughter, Sydney. During a weekend visit that includes a billionaire’s son, kidnappers strike and the family’s safety unravels. James portrays Naomi, Ray’s daughter, who must confront past trauma from a previous climbing accident to try to save her family. The script is credited to Melanie Toast, based on a story by Ana Lily Amirpour.
The reboot’s producers are pursuing a theatrical release with an IMAX rollout, according to marketing and distribution materials. Rocket Science is handling international sales, while CAA Media Finance is representing North American and Chinese territories. The film’s backers are engaging buyers at the TIFF market as they position the title for global distribution.
The original Cliffhanger, directed by Renny Harlin and released in 1993, starred Sylvester Stallone and grossed about $255 million worldwide. Stallone is not involved with the current reimagining or the sequel in development.
Details remain limited about the sequel, including whether members of the current cast or creative team will return. The new film’s production timeline beyond post-production and the schedule for the planned theatrical and IMAX release have not been disclosed. Industry executives at the TIFF market confirmed discussions but said negotiations and casting decisions are still in progress.
With the reboot poised to enter the marketplace and international sales underway, producers appear to be leaning into franchise potential even before the public has seen the reimagined first installment. Rocket Science and Thank You Pictures declined to comment through their representatives, and CAA Media Finance did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
