Selma Blair has drawn sharp online criticism after posting what screenshots show was a brief Instagram tribute to conservative activist Charlie Kirk following his shooting death.

Screenshots circulating on social media and forums showed a comment attributed to the 53-year-old actress that read, "This incredible man. Who would go into the cauldron of indoctrination. And use logic to have dialogue. I am sick for his family. For all of us." After the post and subsequent backlash, Blair disabled comments on her social media accounts.

Kirk, 31, was shot and killed at Utah Valley University last Wednesday. Authorities arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection with the killing; he surrendered to police. FBI Director Kash Patel said Monday that investigators recovered forensic evidence confirming a note in which the suspect allegedly wrote, "I have the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I'm going to take it." Patel said the note was found in the suspect's partner's home and that it had been destroyed but was substantiated during the agency's investigation.

Blair's short tribute prompted swift reactions online, with some users expressing disappointment and others defending the actress's right to a differing view. One user wrote, "Whooooaaaa, I've never seen this comment before. Holy s**t. Man, this bums me out," while another said, "I kind of miss the days before social media when celebrities didn't share every thought that entered their head." A different comment read, "Oh nooooooo I used to like her! Damn." A smaller number of posts defended Blair, saying ideological differences should not prompt cancellation.

The post renewed scrutiny of Blair's past social-media controversies. In 2024, she drew criticism for a now-deleted comment that advocated deporting Democratic Representatives Cori Bush and Rashida Tlaib and included broad criticisms of Islam; Blair later issued an apology saying she had "inadvertently conflated Muslims with fundamentalists." She has publicly discussed her diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, which was disclosed in 2018.

Blair's representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The circulation of screenshots and the rapid online reaction reflected the heightened sensitivity around public figures' statements in the days after a high-profile killing.

Kirk's death has prompted an ongoing investigation by local and federal authorities. Robinson has been taken into custody and faces potential charges related to the shooting; officials have said the inquiry continues as they gather evidence and interview witnesses. The FBI's statements about the alleged note have been part of an effort to establish motive and intent in the case.

The episode underscores the swift amplification of celebrity commentary on social media, where brief public statements can generate intense and immediate public debate and where past remarks are quickly revived and reexamined in new contexts.
